Dr. Ruth Callaghan

EDITOR & MATERIALS LEAD

Ruth leads Substrate Review and writes on the materials that engineering is built from — how metals, alloys, ceramics and composites are won from minerals and ores, and why one material is chosen over another. After a doctorate in materials science and two decades in the UK metals and aerospace-materials supply chain, Ruth turned to explaining the field to the engineers, buyers and specifiers who rely on it. Believes most costly failures start with a material decision made without the full picture.

Iwan Pryce

TESTING & INSPECTION

Iwan covers non-destructive testing and inspection: ultrasonics, radiography, eddy-current and the practical business of proving a weld, casting or pipe is sound without cutting it open. With a career spent on shop floors and in the field rather than the lab, Iwan writes for the people who actually run the probes — method-first, safety-minded, and quick to call out where a shortcut will come back to bite. Particular interest in ultrasonic flaw detection and inspection technique.

Dr. Femi Adeyemi

COMPONENTS & MECHANICAL

Femi is a tribologist and mechanical engineer writing on the components that carry the load: bearings, lubrication, wear and rotating equipment. The focus is applied and unsentimental — how to pick the right component for heat, contamination and duty cycle, and how to make it last. Femi holds a doctorate in mechanical engineering and has spent years diagnosing why parts wear out and what to specify instead, translating hard-won reliability lessons into plain guidance.

Dr. Hannah Voss

MATERIALS & FAILURE ANALYSIS

Hannah covers advanced materials and failure analysis — composites, coatings and the forensic work of establishing why a component broke. Trained as a materials engineer with a doctorate in failure analysis, Hannah approaches each case like an investigation: the fracture surface, the load history and the manufacturing route all leave evidence. Writes the cross-cutting pieces that connect materials choice, testing and mechanical design, drawing on case studies from across manufacturing.
